I started sketching ambigrams (without knowing that such an art even had a name)
at the age of 11, beginning with my own name, "Nick." Friends at school requested
their names to be made into ambigrams, then teachers, etc. After a few years of
practice I realized that I could stylize and mesh several letters together to make
the ambigrams more legible, but as you can tell by the sequence of ambigrams
below, I'm still working to perfect my talent. The earliest of any on this page,
"Travis Tigers" remains the most popular and has found its way into classrooms of
teachers with whom I am unacquainted at my old high school, Travis HS. It took
the longest to design (around eight hours, twelve including the computer editing
and flash), mostly because I had nothing better to do with my few remaining days
of summer in 2007.
All of my ambigrams are drawn from scratch, then edited on my computer. I have
not yet attempted any mirror ambigrams, so all the ones on this page are
rotational, but I am open to requests for the former. Ambigram pricing starts at
$25, and depends on the length of the word(s), difficulty of stylization, and
amount of time required to perfect each ambigram. Based on those variables, the
"Travis Tigers" ambigram, as an example (because I never charged for it), would
have cost around $200, while "Lawrence" cost Mr. Thames $50. Since more
letters make them easier to work with and read, I have a minimum requirement of
4 letters per word.
For those interested in learning how to draw ambigrams themselves, I can sketch
out and email each step in the process for their own choice of custom ambigram.
